A Korean skincare routine for dry skin: layer, don't scrub

Dry skin needs water first and something to hold it in. A layered routine with hydrating toners, ceramides and rich creams, priced at the cheapest store near you.

Dry skin is short on oil; dehydrated skin is short on water. Most people with dry skin have a bit of both, which is why the Korean habit of several thin hydrating layers, sealed with a cream, works so well for them.

Our view: skip strong exfoliation for a few weeks, layer a hydrating toner two or three times, and judge a cream by how your skin feels the next morning rather than right after applying it.

Hydrating toners and essences

Pat a hydrating toner in with your hands, let it sink in, then repeat. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin-rich toners are the classic choice.

Barrier creams

Ceramides, panthenol and "barrier" creams are the step that holds the water in. A richer texture at night, a lighter one in the morning, is a sensible split.

Sleeping masks, once or twice a week

A sleeping mask is a thick last layer you leave on overnight. It is a treat, not a requirement.

Picks are the products the most stores in your country stock, shown cheapest first, so the table changes as stores restock and reprice. Nothing here is medical advice: patch test new products, and see a dermatologist for skin problems that don't settle. More from the blog.
